Opera in Concert announces new season for 2017-2018

Heather Ross, General Director of Opera in Concert, announced the group’s fourth season of bringing innovative professional opera to Dallas. “We are delighted at the community’s response so far, and excited about the new season! Our programming will again blend unusual operatic repertoire with audience favorites, and we will continue our mission of supporting local professional artists with performance opportunities.”

The 2017-2018 season kicks off with a tribute to education, or rather mis-education, as “School Daze” presents two hilarious operas on that theme, Christoph Fehre’s “The Schoolmaster” (long attributed to Telemann) and Chabrier’s “Une Education Manqueé” (“An Incomplete Education”). “The Schoolmaster”, composed in 1751, features an inept professor attempting to control a class of unruly students. Chabrier’s opera focuses on a young married couple whose education lacked a crucial subject – “the birds and the bees”! “The Schoolmaster” will be sung in English and “Une Education Manqueé” in French with dialogues in English. The performance will be in Kurth Hall at the Sammons Center, at 8 pm on Friday, November 17, 2017.

On May 3, 2018 at the Latino Cultural Center, Opera in Concert will present the classic operatic comedy “Don Pasquale” by Gaetano Donizetti. A perennial favorite, this opera relates the story of an elderly bachelor who suddenly decides to look for a wife. This is bad news for his nephew Ernesto, who needs an inheritance from Pasquale in order to marry his fiancée, Norina. Fortunately the young couple is assisted by Pasquale’s physician Dr. Malatesta, and they concoct a plot to make Pasquale see the folly of his plan.

Opera in Concert also produces a summer program in Italy every year, bringing aspiring singers to the ancient university town of Urbino to study the Italian language and to perform concerts in historic sites. Auditions for the 15-member group begin this fall at local universities and applications will close January 15st, 2018.
